I have seen a lot of toys, an awful lot, and it is easy to be rather un-enthusiastic about a lot of them. But the Xia Xia pets are something a little different. xia xia hermit crabs Firstly these are not a toy that performs a million different tasks and can do a lot of different thing. In fact they do very little. But just like the Zhu Zhu pets it doesn’t seem to stop them being loved by the kids. Sometimes simple is best. It certainly means that there is less to go wrong.

Minimal moving parts is always a bonus and although these do rely a lot on moving about the place they are simple so should last for a long time.

How They Work

Very simply indeed. We press down on a claw and this sets the hermit crabs off scuttling about the place in all directions doing a funny walk.

And that is about it as far as movement goes. Nice and easy and the children will get a real kick out of it. But from experience it is simply the toy itself that the children love. They just love to play and make up all kinds of missions and scenarios that involve their favorite crabs.

What Is In The Box

Well, it is more a nice designer case than a box when we buy them. Very nice packaging indeed.

We can either buy a single crab or the set of 4, and the full set is certainly better value for money. If you know your children are going to love them then save your money to begin with and buy all of them in one go.

A Little Surprise

The nice little addition is that we also get a tiny friend with the Xia Xia crabs. Actually pronounced Sha Sha. These little buddies can be put under the shell or even hitch a ride on the shell or in front of it. So we get two toys for the price of one.

There are also a number of playsets also available which really does open up a whole new world. Many can be inter-connected so the crabs can go from the confetti cottage play set to the copacabana playset without stepping out into the real world. It fires up the kids imaginations when they get playsets like this and the crabs can slide about and get up to all manner of mischief.

Xia Xia Pets Price

The price is around $20 at the time of writing and although I have found the best price with Amazon, which is the case nearly all the time, I would not be surprised if this rises dramatically at some point. Popular toys have a habit of becoming very scarce and the main retailers sell out fast. Then we rely on third party sellers who are open to putting any price on that they can sell for.

So buy early to avoid this kind of price hike and buy at the price they are supposed to be.

Overall I think the Xia Xia pets are a great toy and great value for money as long as we do not see any madness near to Christmas time and the price goes up dramatically.
