Qwirkle Board Game
Qwirkle! A quirky name for a quirky game. Who said I wasn’t a poet as well as a toy reviewer?
This is a family game from Mindware, and the youngsters will have just as much fun as the grown-ups. And this is what I love about this type of game. Board games just for the kids are never as popular as when the adults get involved as well. If for nothing more than to keep the peace!
So, where can I buy Qwirkle? Well, I did a Qwirkle price comparison and Amazon came out tops again. If you want to buy Qwirkle for the best price at a great discount then your search is over. Other stores simply don’t seem to compare. It may be the rise of third party sellers, or just the toy market becoming more competitive in general, but they have the best prices, and there is no pint us paying more than we have to.
What Is Qwirkle?
Glad you asked!
For me it is a great way to spend time with the kids. It’s like Scrabble without getting too entrenched in detail. And games last for about three quarters of an hour, which turns out just about right for keeping the kids attention. The first game may take longer though, as you get to grips with how to play.
The Pieces
Each piece is a shape and we have a series of colors for each set too. The counters are nice and easy for the kids to hold and they get to grips pretty quickly with the game.
We get 6 colors and 6 shapes per set, and the idea is to lay down you tiles to match either a color or a shape. Strategy comes into it, and if it sounds complicated it honestly isn’t. The kids picked it up very quickly and the rules really are rather straight-forward.
My Qwirkle Review
As with most of my favorite toys, here at Taylor Toys, what I love is that there is a strong educational slant to it too. The children learn to recognize colors, use motor skills effectively, and best of all, to actually THINK about what they are doing and what the consequences are.
But really that is all just background noise to the kids. They are just having a fun time playing together with the grown-ups. And often beating them too!
Portability
The bonus with this game, as with the Bananagrams game, is the fact it is entirely portable. You don’t have to take a big box with you if you want to play it away from home. A simple drawstring pouch is provided and the tiles can simply be put in this. Then we just need pen and pad and we are good to go. Great for when traveling or going on vacation.
Fun For All Ages
This is not a complex game, and this is really at the heart of the enjoyment everyone gets from it. It can be pretty fast paced at times and it is certainly suitable for young players. Any child of 6 or above is going to grasps the rules in a game or two and then they will be a real challenge, even to the adults.
The association of simple shapes and colors really hits home with the youngsters and they seem to grasp the concept very quickly. Don’t be surprised if you get beaten after a game or 2, children really do seem to have a knack for this type of association game.
The Negatives
To be honest, this is one of the few games that I can’t really find anything bad to say about it. The price is cheap, in fact there is a huge Qwirkle discount via Amazon. If I was being picky then the color selection could have been improved a little and it could look a bit more professional.
But this is a minor point really, and in no way interferes with the overall fun of the game. It certainly wouldn’t put me off actually buying it, that is for sure.
Cheers
Taylor
